Did you know that January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month?
Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative condition that destroys the brain cells affecting memory and deterioration of thinking ability over time. The disease is usually categories in four stages:
– Early Stage: person is aware of their conditions and may show mild symptoms
– Middle Stage: Symptoms become more noticeable and may require help with Activities of Daily Livings (ADLs)
– Late Stage: In this stage, a person might not be able to communicate properly and will require care with ADLs
– End-of-Life: Disease has progressed to a point where a person will need care around the clock. Focus is more on palliative care to ensure individual’s comfort.
In the coming weeks we will review more impact of Alzheimer’s on the patient, impact on primary care providers and family members, activities to help disease progression and coping skills for family member.
